Why Should I Have a Sump Pump Installed?

Why Should I Have a Sump Pump Installed?

Sump Pumps are very important devices that pump out excess moisture and water, this prevents your basement from flooding. The investment in a sump pump is much cheaper than having to pay a deductible on flood insurance or trying to replace uncovered items, or priceless items such as pictures, or family items. Installing a sump pump will protect any assets that you keep stored in your basement.

  • Unwanted House Guests #1: Bacteria

Moisture in your home can result in health issues. Bacteria love a wet, humid, comfy home and a basement with extra moisture is the perfect place for them to live and flourish. For example: a family member in the home gets ill. The bacteria can make their way into the home’s airducts and find the moist, humid air. This not only causes the bacteria to stay alive, but it continues to grow. The germs will start to spread and make their way back into the home to re-infect or spread the illness to other family or friends.

  • Unwanted House Guest #2: Dust Mites

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 13 people have asthma. More than 25 million Americans have asthma. This is 7.7 percent of adults and 8.4 percent of children. What does this have to do with purchasing a sump pump? Well, you know those little pesky dust mites that inflame asthma symptoms? They love a wet, humid environment; just like the bacteria previously mentioned. Those microscopic creatures are a close relative to spiders AND ticks.

I will let you take a moment for your skin to finish crawling.

Many people do not regularly dust and clean their basement, especially an unfinished one; which leaves dust mites in their natural habitat. Throw in moisture and humidity and well you have a giant dust mite party that grows and grows by the minute. Unfortunately, this dust party does not stay in your basement and they will travel throughout your home through your duct system. This does not just include the dust mites themselves, but also their shredded skin and fecal matter… gross, I know!

  • Unwanted House Guest #3: Rodents

If the bacteria and dust mites did not paint a disgusting enough picture… there is more… rodents! Though sometimes small and cute looking, they can be a real problem. Once they get into your warm, humid basement; they start chewing their way through walls and personal belongings. You can also welcome more bacteria to the party that will come from the rodents’ feces… this is sounding like a party no one wants to have! These germs and bacteria contaminate surfaces and the air which will flow through the air vents into the home causing, you guessed it, more health issues.

  • Floods? They never happen here… but what if they did?

Now that we are done with all that creepy, crawly talk; Let’s get back to flooding. We all know that flooding is never good and can come very unexpected. If you do not live in a major flood area, you might not have flood insurance which will leave you paying for most repairs and recovery of your home. This could be thousands of dollars, not including items that are just not replaceable such as: pictures, family heirlooms, or items that have sentimental value. You could buy 5 sump pumps before you could ever reach the cost of your home being damaged by a flood. Even if you have insurance, your deductible could be higher than the initial cost of a sump pump.
